The ELMS campaign was reignited at Spa over the weekend, and there was a definite renewed feeling of determination and drive. We’ve had a really positive start to the programme, and each event has seen genuine improvement in terms of pace and overall performance. Spa was no different, and it was a real credit to the whole team, as well as Martin and Lorcan.
With this new sense of charge after the summer break, the steps the Grid Motorsport outfit has made really shone through. The performance over each session was gaining momentum, and Martin delivered a fantastic qualifying run to put us firmly in contention, starting on the second row, against a stellar line-up.
It was going to be important to run a clean race, and to stay out of trouble, and that is how we approached the whole weekend. Do things right, run our own race, and it really paid off. We were in the thick of the action from the start, but we stayed out of trouble as incidents unfolded, and we kept in the hunt for the podium. We were lacking some overall top speed to keep us fighting for the win, but slick pitwork and relentless determination put us where our qualifying pace had been.
The circuit has undergone some big updates this year, with laptimes getting quicker as a result, but track limits was definitely the talk of the paddock over the weekend. They would ultimately decide our result, but we kept fighting to the end, and the effort saw us cross the line in P5. It was the end result of a huge effort by all, and we are definitely one step closer to that podium result, which is definitely coming.
