What a weekend to be part of this team. The FIA World Endurance Championship arrived at the Circuit of the Americas for the Lone Star Le Mans, and with it came a home race for the Heart of Racing. Six hours of battles in Texas, in front of a home crowd is about as good as it gets. Only topped by then standing on the podium at the end of the six hours, alongside our teammates. This one will live long in the memory.
It started with Gray, who put in a mega effort during qualifying, when it really mattered on Saturday. His lap put us inside the top-10 at the end of the session, which secured us a shot in Hyperpole, and a guaranteed top-10 start. Then Dudu delivered in style – a second consecutive pole position, backing up the amazing result we scored in Brazil last time out. Two poles on the bounce is a serious achievement, and it says everything about the level this team is operating at right now. Huge credit to Dudu, and everyone in the garage who gave us the car to fight right at the very front – pole position on home soil was a big score.
It was far from straightforward, and the race start was tricky with wet but drying conditions. Despite that, we all took every hour in our stride. It was an action-packed six hours, and between Gray, Dudu and myself, we kept the #23 well inside the top 10 throughout, constantly in the mix for the top five and the podium positions. By the midpoint of the race, we were running P4, right in the fight.
I jumped in as we came up for hour four of six, and it was one of those stints where everything clicked – I managed to work my way forward, as high as P2 at one point before coming in for our final stop. From there it was a battle all the way to the flag, and Dudu did a great job to bring the car home in P3.
To top it all off, our sister car took the overall win – the team’s first victory in two years. To share that with a group of people who work so hard, and at the team’s home race, on American soil, is genuinely special. Pole position, podium, and a win for the wider team – you couldn’t write it much better than that.
It was a huge team effort from start to finish, and I couldn’t be prouder of everyone involved. On to Japan.
