It was an outside chance, but we had put ourselves in the best position to fight for the British GT championship title, and the pace was certainly in the car. We needed a strong result, and the fight was very much on. We truly gave it everything, but it wasn’t meant to be this year.
In some ways, in the championship battle, being the underdog makes thigns slightly easier. While control isn’t completely with us, the pressure is slightly less. We had to bring our A-game, but we were the hunter, not the hunted. We have approached every race weekend the same way, taking each event at face value, running our plans and just going out there with a clear target. Get the best result we can.
The last qualifying result of the season saw us start P6, and Giacomo made our intentions clear from the opening lap. This was our opportunity to get after it, and places were there for the taking. The addition of changeable conditions and rain early on added some extra spice to things, and we were looking in a good place. The two hours would deliver some exciting action.
Rain started falling on lap 5, and we were doing what we needed to do. Gaining positions and staying out of trouble. Managing the conditions well, Giacomo was in control of things, and the restart after a safety car saw the #7 firmly in the fight. However, our title challenge was dented with contact when making a pass on the championship rivals. Both cars went off in the tricky conditions, but we were then down the order and back to having to remake up the positions we had already gained.
It was going to take a mammoth effort, but if more determination was needed, or possible, then this setback provided it. The fire was well and truly lit, but we would need to try something different. More rain would give us that opportunity, and we rolled the dice with a switch to wets in a bid to jump the cars ahead and take advantage of the worsening conditions. It was a bold call, and it was the right one at that moment, but the conditions changed so quickly that we were then forced to be back in for slicks. Unfortunately, our rivals went the other way, choosing to struggle on slicks on a wet track, but the conditions came back to them, and this additional setback meant we lost more time. It was simply a judgement call on the weather, which was as close as the toss of a coin.
The end result saw us take the final Pro-Am point, securing P2 in the championship and P4 for Blackthorn AMR. We have got stronger with every race, Giacomo delivered another great drive all weekend, and the team have fought at every step. It was not the overall result we hoped for, obviously, but not for a lack of want and trying. I am proud of what we achieved, and know that we gave it everything.
