Jonny to open GT World Challenge title bid at ‘special’ circuit

When the flag drops and the three hours of Monza begins on Sunday (18 April), Aston Martin ace Jonny Adam will be looking to help repeat history – and in the process collect a title he was denied last year.

The Scotsman will once again line up alongside Alex West and Chris Goodwin for the GT World World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup Pro Am class in the Garage 59 Aston Martin Vantage GT3.

The combination proved stunningly successful last year, with one slight hitch.

“Garage 59 won the Pro Am title last season with Alex and Chris,” explains Jonny.

“Unfortunately I couldn’t take part in the final round as it clashed with WEC Bahrain race, so I lost out on a championship win. That’s something I definitely want to put right in 2021.”

In addition to his outing with Garage 59 in the Endurance Cup, for the first time Jonny will also double up and compete in the Sprint Cup alongside Alex West.

“I’ve never done both series together due to other racing commitments, so I’m really looking forward to it,” says Jonny.

“The team are great to work with and in total it will mean 10 weeks of racing in the GTWC Europe including the Spa 24 Hours in July, which is a great opportunity to deliver consistent performances and challenge for silverware.

“An added bonus will be going to Misano and Magny Cours, two circuits I’ve never had the chance to race at before.”

The strength of the GT World Challenge Europe is underlined by the fact that 44 GT3 machines have been entered for the season opener at Monza – with 14 crews in the Pro Am class.

“It’s a really strong grid this weekend for round one, and Monza is always a special circuit to visit,” Jonny added.

“We missed racing there in 2020 due to the pandemic, it will be great to be back and we believe the Vantage GT3 will be well-suited to the layout so we are going into it with confidence.

“I really enjoyed racing alongside Alex and Chris last season and we had great success, we are focused on repeating that in both the Endurance and Sprint Cups this year and getting our hands on even more trophies this time round.”

All the action from Sunday’s three hour race at Monza, which starts at 15:00hrs, will be streamed live on the GT World YouTube channel.
